Here are some of the frequently asked questions about Breastfeeding…
Q: How Often Do I Breastfeed My Baby?
A: We recommend a minimum of 8-12 sessions in a 24-hour period. These sessions are especially critical in the first days of life to stimulate adequate milk supply.
Q: How Much Milk Does My Baby Need?
A: Your baby's stomach starts off very small. She will only need about 5-15mL each feed for the first 1-2 days. By day 3 this amount increases to 20-30mL or about 1 ounce. When your baby is about 10 days old she will likely be taking 60-90mL every feed.
Q: Will I Be Able To Make Enough Milk For My Baby?
A: 95% of all women can make more than adequate milk. If you are having trouble producing sufficient milk quantities please contact us for further assistance.
Q: Do I Have To Stick To A Special Diet While Nursing?
A: NO! Please eat what you want, but keep a well balanced diet with plenty of fluids. Rarely does a mother need to alter her diet. In some instances we will ask a mother to avoid certain foods due to a child's food intolerances or severe food allergies.
Q: Can I Safely Take Medication While Nursing?
A: The vast majority of medications are safe for newborns. Medications such as Tylenol, Motrin, amoxicillin, and low dose pain killers will not adversely affect your infant. Please call us if you have any specific questions regarding a medication you may be taking.
Q: What Else Should I Feed My Baby?
A: For the first 6 months we do not generally recommend any other foods or liquids. Your breastmilk will supply your infant with all the necessary calories, vitamins, and nutrients she will need to grow up healthy. We do recommend a daily supplement of Vitamin D.
